The structural engineer with a knowledge and understanding ofÌýmaterialÌýbehaviourÌýand structural actions is able to design withÌýeconomy and elegance, structures thatÌýfulfiÌýllÌýtheir intended
purpose, while resisting safely the forces to which they may beÌýsubjected.Ìý
Ìý
However, with rapid advances in material technology andÌýavailability of advanced computational techniques theÌýsuccessful structural engineer must continuously update his/her knowledge and keep abreast with recent development inÌýstructural engineering.
Ìý
The Department of Civil Engineering at the University ofÌýMoratuwaÌýaims toÌýfulfillÌýthe need for continuing professionalÌýdevelopment by conducting a postgraduate course in structural
engineering design on a part-time basis for practisingÌýengineers.Ìý
Ìý
The course is conducted by the Division of Building and StructuralÌýEngineering of the Department. This division comprises expertsÌýin many aspects of modern structural engineering design. TheyÌýhave established a close relationship with the industry throughÌýconsultancy and contract research in areas such as concreteÌýtechnology, timber technology, building materials, masonryÌýstructures and also structural design and investigations.ÌýResearch in design methodology, tall buildings, andÌýfiniteÌýelement analysis are also carried out.
Ìý
Course Structure:
The following subjects are taught in three terms with written
examinations at the end of each term:
• Computer Analysis of Structures
• Reinforced Concrete Structures
• Pre-Stressed Concrete Structures
• Timber Structures
• Steel Structures
• Water Retaining Structures
• Masonry Structures
• Advanced Structural Analysis
• Design Methodology
Ìý
Intake:
The annual intake is limited to 35 students
Ìý
MEng Degree:
Duration: 24 months (Part-time)
The candidates selected for the MEng degree programme mustÌýobtain a pass grade in each of the subjects in order to qualifyÌýfor theÌýMEngdegree. In addition, a suitable research/design
project needs to be carried out with a dissertation submittedÌýafter completion of the project.
Ìý
PG Diploma:
Duration: 12-15 months
Candidates selected for the postgraduate diploma must obtainÌýa pass grade in each of the subjects to obtain PG diploma.ÌýHowever, the registration of such candidates will not be able
to upgrade to that of MEng degree at a later stage.
Ìý
Entry Requirements:
The Degree of Bachelor of Science of Engineering of theÌýUniversity ofÌýMoratuwa,ÌýspecialisingÌýin Civil Engineering;
Ìý
OR
Any other engineering degree, specialising in the field of civilÌýengineering as determined by the Faculty and equivalent toÌý(a) above as determined by the Faculty and approved by the
Senate of the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ;
Ìý
OR
At least, the associate membership of a recognised professionalÌýengineering institute in theÌýfiÌýeldÌýof civil engineering asÌýdetermined by the Faculty and approval by the Senate of
the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, and a minimum of two years ofÌýexperience after obtaining such membership.
