Landscape design has been understood as the effectiveÌýordering of our environment in the past and it has been anÌýactivity attempted by all. However in a world with shortages ofÌýspace, raw materials, dwindling natural resources and climateÌýchange, the need of this responsibility is delegated more andÌýmore to professional designersÌýspecialisingÌýin landscape design.

The objective of the course is to train landscape designers to beÌýin the forefront of Sri Lankan landscape design practice whoÌýsuccessfully integrate nature and culture producing innovativeÌýsustainable cost-effective environments. The course addressesÌýthe urban and natural environments at macro- and micro- levels.ÌýStudents are encouraged to maintain high academic standardsÌýto seek philosophical approaches at concept formulation withÌýcareful consideration to detail design that echo the character ofÌýthe existing site and its macro environments. Emphasis is made onÌýthe use of endemic and indigenous flÌýoraÌýthat supports Sri Lanka’sÌýdiverseÌýavifaunaÌýand fauna. The student is made aware of theÌýresponsibilities of protecting and maintaining the characterÌýof the landscape environment for the future of Sri Lanka.ÌýThe subjects in theÌýfirstÌýyear (PG Diploma level).

History of Landscape Architecture
The study of the legacy of the rich historic heritage of Sri LankaÌýand other inspiring sites of the East and West.
Geomorphology
The study of relevant aspects of the varying geological sites inÌýSri Lanka accompanied by study tours.
Ecology and Natural Resources
Study of ecology and its important effects on the landscapeÌýenvironments. Upholding biodiversity and the role played byÌýforest landscapes. Study tours toÌýSinharajaÌýand other relatedÌýsites.
Plant Sciences( Soft Landscaping )
Study of flora. Importance of using endemic, indigenous floraÌýin landscape design. Flora used forÌýspecific purpose such asÌýshade, to uphold biodiversity, control erosion, act as visualÌýbarriers etc. Introducing the need to eliminate invasive speciesÌýand highlighting its harmful effects.
Landscape Technology or Hard Landscaping
Study of selection of materials and design details such as steps,Ìýramps, paving retaining walls, water feature, seats, lightÌýfittingsÌýetc,ÌýminimisingÌýthe use of paving in order to avoid heat islandÌýeffects and to encourage absorption of rain water. IntroducingÌýthe need of details that are in relation to theÌýspecific design.
Landscape Design
Introduction to the design process by lectures site visits andÌýassignments. Understanding analysis, brief concept formulation,Ìýdesign, detail design, maintenance and management. TheÌýstudents are encouraged to be siteÌýspecific in their approach toÌýdesign in order to showcase a Sri Lankan identity. The knowledgeÌýof the key subjects to be integrated in the landscape design.ÌýYear-twoÌýMScÌýin Landscape Design consists of a DissertationÌýand a Comprehensive Design.
