MSc / PG Diploma Remote Sensing and GIS

This course is for graduates who wish to develop theirÌýknowledge of the principles and applications of remote sensingÌý(RS) and geographical information systems (GIS) to solve many

real-world problems. RS and GIS become key technology toolsÌýfor the collection, storage and analysis of spatially referenced data. Industries thatÌýutiliseÌýthese spatial technologies include

agriculture, forestry, mining, market research, natural resourcesÌýmanagement, environmental analysis including natural hazardsÌýas well as the social and medical science etc. The course focusesÌýon collection, management and analysis of spatial data, andÌýthe development of technical and professional skills that can beÌýused in the workplace or in research.

TheÌýprogrammeÌýconsists of both core and optional elements.ÌýCore topics include:ÌýArcGIS,ÌýArcViewÌýandÌýERDASÌýImagineÌýsoftware training; applications of very high spatial resolution

satellite data; new remote sensing techniques including groundÌýbased and airborneÌýLiDARÌýapplications; spatial data analysisÌýandÌývisualisation; digital terrainÌýmodelling; applied GIS and

remote sensing project, working with a research or industrialÌýpartner.

The course will allow you to integrate GIS skills with the powerÌýof satellite remote sensing and develop applied vocational andÌýprofessional skills relevant to work or research. You will be ableÌýto work with tutors who have international researchÌýprofiÌýles inÌýGIS and remote sensing, and the course offersÌýenvironmentallyorientedÌýtraining in GIS, which is unique in Sri Lanka

MScÌýand PG Diploma course structure provides considerableÌýflÌýexibilityÌýallowing students to quickly gain the GIS and RSÌýknowledge andÌýqualifiÌýcationsÌýthey need today, and to add to

• The Degree of Bachelor of the Science in EngineeringÌýof the University ofÌýMoratuwa, Sri Lanka;

OR

• Any other degree in a relevant field with two yearsÌýofÌýfieldÌýexperience where both the relevance and theÌýexperience are determined by the Faculty and approvedÌýby the Senate of the University ofÌýMoratuwa, Sri Lanka.
