MSc /PG Diploma in Urban Design

This course is a one-year postgraduate diploma, leading toÌýthe two-year Master’s Degree in Urban Design. The aim of thisÌýcourse is to impart knowledge towards achieving competenceÌýin the art of urban design and create awareness of the skillÌýamongst the allied disciplines. This course is ideal for earlyÌýand mid-career persons with strong emphasis on urban designÌýeducation.

The postgraduate course in urban design at the University ofÌýMoratuwaÌýhelps to develop professionals who are capable ofÌýseeing the city from multiple viewpoints and who relish workingÌýwith interdisciplinary teams. The course equips students with theÌýnecessary skills to undertake design research and to learn aboutÌýurban history, theory, urban design principles and fundamentalsÌýand communication methods. This is a studio-based course inÌýwhich students gain expert knowledge, enabling them to buildÌýa career in urban design or relatedÌýfields.

This course aims to:

• Provide a postgraduate level education in urban design whichÌýmeets the fundamental demand expectations in the practice ofÌýurban designÌýfield.

• Provide students with required skills in urban design andÌýrelated areas.

• Serve an integrating role between various related otherÌýdisciplines such as planning, transport engineering, architecture,Ìýlandscape design, conservation, facility management – andÌýbuilding cross-disciplinary strength.

• Open avenues to lead to further academic studies and research.

Entry Requirements:

• TheÌýHonoursÌýDegree of Bachelor of Architecture.

• The Degree of Bachelor of the Science of Built EnvironmentÌýand a minimum of two years of relevant experienceÌýrecognisedÌýby the Faculty of Architecture, University ofÌýMoratuwa, after obtaining the said Degree.

•ÌýHonoursÌýDegree of Bachelor of the Science of Town andÌýCountry Planning and a minimum of one year of relevantÌýexperienceÌýrecognisedby the Faculty of Architecture,ÌýUÌýniversityÌýofÌýMoratuwa, after obtaining the said degree.

• Postgraduate Diploma in Town and Country Planning or PostgraduateÌýDiploma in Urban Development of the University ofÌýMoratuwaÌýand a minimum of one year of relevant experienceÌýrecognisedÌýby the Faculty of Architecture, University ofÌýMoratuwa, after obtaining the said PG diploma.

• AnyÌýfiÌýveÌýyear degree acceptable to the Senate on theÌýrecommendation of the Faculty of Architecture.

• Any four yearÌýhonoursÌýdegree with related work experienceÌýin urban design, city planning, habitat design, spatial andÌýphysical planning of minimum three years after obtainingÌýthe degreeÌýrecognisedÌýand acceptable to the Senate on theÌýrecommendation of the Faculty of Architecture.

• The full professionalÌýqualifiÌýcationÌýin Architecture, TownÌýand Country Planning, Civil Engineering, Quantity SurveyingÌýand Facility Management from the respective professionalÌýinstitutes and universities together with related workingÌýexperience after obtaining the full professionalÌýqualifiÌýcationÌýand acceptable to the Senate on the recommendation of theÌýFaculty of Architecture.
