Road Safety and ITS laboratory was initially set up with funding received from World Health Organization (WHO).Currently,ÌýUOMÌýhas undertaken improving the accident database of Sri Lanka inÌýcollaboration with the Police and through funding received from WHO.
Rapid development of highway network coinciding with increase in vehicle usage has resulted in steady growth of road accidents in Sri Lanka over the past decade. University ofÌýMoratuwaÌýis activelyÌýengaged in Road Safety related projects and is also a member of the National council for Road safety.
The university has made a significant contribution to improve safety standard of Sri Lanka, in providing expertise on road safety issues, working very closely with the Sri Lanka Police, through conducting trainingÌýprogrammesÌýfor professionals in stake holder institutions etc. Considering these,Ìýthe Road Safety and ITS laboratory can make a significant contribution to improve these initiatives.
In addition to accident data analysis research, it is expected to equip the road safety laboratory with modern equipment to study human factors related safety and model driver-pedestrian behaviorÌýapplicable for Sri Lankan condition. Furthermore researches related to road infrastructure design for vulnerable road users and improve accessibility and safety standards of design are one of the objectives of the proposed laboratory.
ITS laboratory will be a state of the art laboratory focused to do research in Advance Traffic signaling system, intelligent parking systems, driver/ passenger information systems, real time traffic condition updating, driver warning systems for defensive driving etc.
