BACHELOR OF SCIENCE HONOURS in Facilities Management

Department of Building Economics offers a four-year Bachelor of Science Honours in Facilities Management. This programme covers a wide arena of subjects matter to equip the graduate with knowledge and skills in Facilities Management. In addition to the knowledge imparted by way of lectures,these programmes emphasise on acquiring practical skills as well. The first cohort for this novel degree programme is enrolled in year 2006. The programme is underpinned by a wide range of local and international contact.

Recognising the importance of independent growth for the FM degree programme, the Department decided to initiate the process of establishing a new Department for Facilities Management under the Faculty of Architecture during 2019. This strategic move was aimed at providing a more specialized and comprehensive approach to preparing the next generation of facility management professionals. WHAT听IS FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & WHO IS A FACILITIES MANAGER ?

Facilities Management concept was initiated in the late 1980鈥檚 in the United States, as companies began to outsource their support services to external service providers.

Facilities management provides an integrated approach to operating, maintaining, improving and adapting the buildings and infrastructure of an organisation in order to create an environment that strongly supports the primary business objective of that organisation. It is an extremely wide and all embracing activity that encompasses the integration of people, place, process and technology of the organisation.听 As a Facilities Manager, you will be required to amalgamate the principles of business administration, architecture, and the behavioural and engineering sciences to ensure the proper functionality of the work environment.

ENTRY听REQUIREMENTS AND TARGET ENROLMENTS

The selection of students for admission to undergraduate programmes in Universities is carried out by the University Grants Commission based on the admission policy laid out by them with the concurrence of the government.

The students to be eligible to the BSc Hons听(FM) degree programme should have taken Combined Mathematics or Accountancy at the General Certificate of Examinations (Advanced Level). Further , they should have taken two other subjects from the following.听

  • Chemistry, Higher Mathematics
  • Physics, Economics
  • Business Statistics, Business Studies, Hard Technology

In addition to above, the student should satisfy the followings at their General Certificate of Examinations (Ordinary Level) to be eligible for degree programmes in BSc Hons听(FM).

  • At least a credit pass in Mathematics
  • At least a pass in Science
  • At least a credit pass in English language

The annual enrolment to the FM degree programme is 50.

ACADEMIC听PROGAMMES

THE听PROGAMME

The Honours Degree of Bachelor of Science in Facilities Management is a听four-year full time honours degree programmes. It is听structured as follows.

  1. A programme extending over seven academic semesters,
  2. A 32 week period of industrial placement and
  3. Research dissertation as specified.

In every level there are two semesters with approximately 26 weeks each. Each semester comprises of a wide range of subjects and various assessments methods have been employed to evaluate the undergraduates鈥 performance. COURSE听ACCREDITATION

The Honours Degree of Bachelor of Science in Facilities Management degree programme has been accredited by the "Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)" since the year 2006 and 鈥淚nternational Facility Management Association (IFMA)鈥 since the year 2019.

COURSE听STRUCTURE

Bachelor of Science Honours听in Facilities Management is a four-year full time honours degree programme. Itis structured into eight semesters. In every level, there are two semesters with approximately 26听weeks each. Each semester comprises of a wide range of subjects and various assessments to evaluate undergraduates' performance. The degree of integration across the subjects increases as the student progresses through the semesters.

Modules are categorised under several streams

  • Services Technology
  • Property Management
  • Project Studies
  • Construction Technology
  • Management and IT Studies

Commencing from first semester of level three, undergraduates have industrial placements for 32 weeks which is assigned with 8 credits. Later in level four, they are required to undertake a research and produce a dissertation whilst attending lectures and class assignments. This provides with an opportunity to use and develop the attributes stated in the aims of the course and to demonstrate the extent to which they have fulfilled those aims.

The above degree programmes consist of different modules which can be compulsory or elective and each module is assigned a credit value representing the student's workload. Most importantly the attendance of a student enrolled for the degree program should not be less than 80%. And a student will not qualify for graduation if he/she does not complete all requirements of graduation within eight academic years from the time of registration, except by the approval from the senate. The requirement for graduation is 150 credits and 10 credits of this shall be earned from Non-GPA modules.听听
