The book describes life in ancient Sri Lanka and Portugal, records the terms of trade in the East, the arrival in the island of the Francis- cans missionaries and their missionary works. Another objective of this publication is to consider architecture as a living record and a positive contribution of our transnational identity that had spread over four hundred years through the existence of the church. Dr. (Ms.) Hiranthi Pathirana Traditional Jewellery Of Sri Lanka |
![]() |
|
| Description: Traditional Jewellery of Sri Lanka by Hiranthi Pathirana is a valuable addition to the existing literature on the heritage of gems and jewellery in Sri Lanka. It gathers the results of her research work, professional expertise as a teacher and designer, field visits and consultation experience. The book is full of beautiful images from built sites, museum pieces and jewellery in current use. The book derives from the rich inheritance of gems and pearls which has contributed to Sri Lanka鈥檚 renown from ancient times. Over a period of 2500 years of history, body ornamentation seems to have fulfilled a higher purpose in Sri Lankan tradition and culture with beliefs and rituals associated with devotion, pride, self consciousness, dignity and confidence. The book distinguishes the regional differences from Kandyan to southern traditions. Creating jewellery unfolds the freedom of imagination and knowledge in art and design, raising the imagination of the people. Modern commercial production of jewellery has negatively affected artisanal work and crafts have shown a marked decline enhancing the need for innovation, creativity an high quality designs with unique identity. This study is divided into several key areas which includes the introduction to jewellery with early traditions and philosophy, design and material elements including geology, nature, beads as well as the influence of other cultures from east to west and the technology of metallurgical creations. This publication joins the prestigious volumes series of the National Trust Sri Lanka. |

Prof. Rohan Munasinghe Optimization and optimal control in a nutshell |
![]() |
|
| Description: 鈥淭his book concisely presents the optimization process and optimal control process with examples and simulations to help self-learning and better comprehension. It starts with function optimization and constraint inclusion and then extends to functional optimization using the calculus of variations. The development of optimal controls for continuous-time, linear, open-loop systems is presented using Lagrangian and Pontryagin-Hamiltonian methods, showing how to introduce the end-point conditions in time and state. The closed-loop optimal control for linear systems with a quadratic cost function, well-known as the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is developed for both time-bound and time-unbounded conditions. Some control systems need to maximize performance alongside cost minimization. The Pontryagin's maximum principle is presented in this regard with clear examples that show the practical implementation of it. It is shown through examples how the maximum principle leads to control switching and Bang-Bang control in certain types of systems. The application of optimal controls in discrete-time open-loop systems with the quadratic cost is presented and then extended to the closed-loop control, which results in the model predictive control (MPC). Throughout the book, examples and Matlab simulation codes are provided for the learner to practice the contents in each section. The aligned lineup of content helps the learner develop knowledge and skills in optimal control gradually and quickly.鈥. |

| Description: 鈥淭his book aims to discuss the fashion of the Kings and Queens during the Kandyan Kingdom of Sri Lanka (15th Century 鈥 early 19th Century). There are plenty of visual records to study the background of this setting such as sketches and descriptions made by observer鈥損articipants of the period, historical murals, carvings and sculptures of the period. Wall paintings which depict the dress of the era, sketches of foreign diplomats are observed in the research. Historical details about the Kandyan dress are well documented visually, even more in the early administrative eras. Original written sources and true pictorial evidences were used for the research. Besides, the Kandyan tradition has a living culture as well. Therefore, when dresses of the Kandyan era are examined, the Kandyan period is remarkably marked with very significant signs with ample visual and written evidences. Museum collections of dresses belonging to the era were observed.鈥. |

Prof.(Mrs) Ranathunga GM Art and tradition of Sri Lanka, Vol. 1 : Music of Sri Lanka |
![]() |

| Description: 鈥淭his Volume aims to discern the inter-relationship of Tradition and Music of Sri Lanka. Many foreign cultural influences shaped the tradition of Sri Lanka throughout her history. Traditional customs, norms, values and beliefs were mixed with different foreign cultural values and norms that came to be practiced then made into our own tradition, the original agent of influence hardly being evident. Sri Lankan music originated, developed and modified in relation to tradition. The music tradition of Sri Lanka has been developed since the prehistoric age. Today Sri Lankan music plays an essential role in signifying a unique cultural identity. Musical instruments, methodology of playing, performance, and occasions for playing still follow traditional customs. There are plenty of visual and written records to study the background of the subject such as sketches and descriptions made by observer鈥損articipants of the ancient period, historical murals, carvings and sculptures of different periods. Wall paintings which depict the music of different eras are observed in a research study. Original written sources and true pictorial evidences were used for the research. Museum collections of music belonging to the ancient administrative eras were observed. Pictorial data were cross-checked with different literary sources, such as temple murals and particular literature and research work pertaining to the subject enabled to building a strong logical analysis of the tradition of music of Sri Lanka.鈥. |

Prof. Sanjeeva Witharana Boiling of refrigerants on enhanced surfaces and boiling of nanofluids |
![]() |

| Description: This thesis addresses the topic of enhanced boiling heat transfer. As heat transfer across a temperature difference always constitutes a thermodynamic loss, processes are generally more efficient and economic when the temperature difference between the heat source and the heat sink is maintained as small as possible. To achieve that goal, two methodologies are employed in the present work. In the first method, a large number of bubble nucleation sites are provided on the heat surface. In the second method, small concentrations of nano-scale particles are suspended in the heat transfer fluid. Then the respective factors of enhancement are evaluated. . |

Dr. Prasanna Illankoon Soft issues of industry 4.0 : a study on human-machine interactions |
![]() |
|
| Description: Autonomous industrial operations are becoming the norm due to advancements in technology, which has led to both advantages and disadvantages for the organisations involved. The use of intelligent systems has resulted in higher system reliability, a higher quality product, and reduced risk for human error. These systems collect large amounts of information, analyse them, make predictions, and take decisions, of which humans cannot do in the same capacity, have led to new and expanded levels of interactions. One key aspect concerns the fact that human interaction has decreased although has become more critical than before. Even if the systems are advanced and automated, human intervention is still necessary: such as maintenance actions, selection of data to train the system, and advanced decision making. Human intervention is especially crucial when dealing with complex and safety critical systems, where and when immediate interventions are required. Moreover, an expert human can improvise and make novel decisions in a capacity that present intelligent systems cannot. The problem is that both humans and machines need assistance to perform well. Autonomous operation is not perfect and when problems arise, humans must react. Although it is common that humans when not actively interacting with the system tend to lose perspective and find it difficult to quickly analyse a situation when it arises. Which means that they fall 鈥渙ut of the loop鈥. Their ability to gain a good understanding of the situation and make good decisions when the system suddenly needs their interaction is lost. In other words, humans have lost their situation awareness and a good situation awareness is needed in dynamic environments if they are to intervene quickly and successfully. If, and when a system can assist a human to quickly assess the situation and get back 鈥渋nto the loop鈥 then the human can make educated decisions in a much quicker fashion. The aim of this thesis is to explore and describe the human abilities to develop situation awareness of the changing situations of engineering systems in order to facilitate maintenance and to make recommendations to improve Situation Awareness about intelligent maintenance systems. |
