It is with great pride and a deep sense of responsibility that I assume the role of Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the 成人头条. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has long been recognized as one of the leading departments within the Faculty of Engineering, with a distinguished history of producing graduates who have excelled both nationally and internationally. Over the decades, the Department has established a reputation for academic excellence, innovation, and professional integrity, serving as a foundation for generations of engineers who continue to contribute meaningfully to industry, research, and society. As the Department moves forward, my commitment is to preserve and strengthen this legacy while guiding it towards new opportunities and greater global impact.
The Department鈥檚 core strengths continue to lie in its strong undergraduate education, rigorous postgraduate studies, and sustained commitment to excellence in teaching, research, consultancy, and outreach. The undergraduate program, recognized under the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka and accredited under the Washington Accord, currently offers a BSc. Eng.(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, with dedicated streams in Aeronautical Engineering and Mechatronic Systems Engineering. At present, eighty students specialize in Mechanical Engineering, while ten students each pursue studies in Aeronautical Engineering and Mechatronics and Automation Systems Engineering. In response to evolving industry demands and rapid technological advancements, the Department is in the process of expanding and restructuring its academic offerings. The existing streams in Aeronautical Engineering and Mechatronic Systems Engineering are expected to evolve into dedicated specializations alongside Mechanical Engineering. Furthermore, new streams in emerging areas such as Automotive Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering are being introduced to provide students with broader opportunities for specialization in high-demand sectors.
Research remains a central pillar of the Department鈥檚 identity. Through strong national and international collaborations, the Department has established itself as a center for impactful and multidisciplinary research. Our academic staff and researchers continue to contribute to fields such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, robotics and automation, smart materials, computational mechanics, and sustainable technologies. The Department also provides extensive opportunities for doctoral and master鈥檚 level research, fostering innovation that addresses national priorities while contributing to global advancements in engineering and technology.
The Department currently offers two highly regarded taught postgraduate programs, including the MEng/PG Diploma in Energy Technology and the MEng/PG Diploma in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. In addition, the collaborative MSc/PG Diploma in Building Services Engineering, conducted together with the Departments of Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, has become a popular program among engineering professionals in Sri Lanka. A new taught postgraduate program in Mechatronic Systems Engineering is also being developed to cater to emerging industry needs.
Beyond academics and research, the Department maintains strong engagement with industry through consultancy services, outreach activities, and collaborative projects. Supported by a dedicated team of academic and non-academic staff, the Department continues to provide an environment that nurtures creativity, professionalism, innovation, and leadership among students.
