The Department of Electrical Engineering, ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, warmly congratulates Prof. K.T.M.U. Hemapala on his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ for a three-year term, with effect from 03 September 2026.
The 12th Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference (MERCon 2026) was successfully held on 13 and 14 August 2026 at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, bringing together researchers, academics, industry professionals, and students to share the latest advancements in engineering research and innovation.
The Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of the Department of Electrical Engineering, ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, held its 30th Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, 18th August 2026, at the Civil Auditorium of the University. The milestone gathering brought together academic staff and student members of the Society to review a year of activity and to elect the office bearers for the year ahead.
The Department of Electrical Engineering at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ officially welcomed its 2025 intake of 90 students on 18th August 2026 at the Department Seminar Room. The ceremony commenced with welcome remarks by Eng. Terashmila Lasagani, Semester 2 Coordinator, followed by an address by the Head of the Department, Prof.
Prof. Lidula N. Widanagama Arachchige of the Department of Electrical Engineering, ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, participated as a panelist at the IESL Women in Engineering (WinE) Forum 2026. The forum was organized by the Women Engineers’ Forum of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), in collaboration with the Melwa Conglomerate, in celebration of International Women in Engineering Day 2026.
Prof. Asanka Rodrigo of the Department of Electrical Engineering, ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, delivered the keynote address at the National Workshop on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) held on 16 July 2026 at the Sapphire Banquet Hall, BMICH, Colombo. The workshop was organized by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) in collaboration with the Solar Industries Association (SIA) of Sri Lanka.
Prof. Anura Wijayapala has been promoted to the post of Senior Professor in Electrical Engineering at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ with effect from 14th February 2025.
Snr.Prof. Wijayapala graduated with a BSc (Engineering) (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ in 1991. He obtained his MSc from the same university in 2001. Before joining the Department of Electrical Engineering in 2005, he gained 15 years of experience in the private-sector electrical engineering industry.
The Department of Electrical Engineering warmly congratulates Snr. Prof. Udayanga Hemapala on his promotion to the post of Senior Professor in Electrical Engineering at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, with effect from 06th June 2025.
Snr. Prof. Hemapala graduated with a BSc (Engineering) (Hons) in Electrical Engineering with First Class Honours from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ in 2004. He obtained his PhD from the University of Genova, Italy, in 2009.
Prof. Lidula N. Widanagama Arachchige of the Department of Electrical Engineering, ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, delivered an online workshop titled "Mastering the Art of Conference Paper Writing: From Concept to Publication" on 9 June 2026. The workshop was organized by the IET Sri Lanka Section as a pre-conference event for the IET Annual Technical Conference 2026.
The well-attended session brought together an enthusiastic audience of undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students, researchers, academics, and industry professionals.
Prof. Asanka Rodrigo delivered a lecture on IET Wiring Regulations – BS 7671 Amendment 4 (Orange Book) at a well-attended IET Evening Technical Event held on 26 May 2026 at Hotel Galadari, Colombo.
